On July 31, for 141 years, the Stara Zagora community has been organizing commemorative rituals for these significant events and sacredly keeps the historical memory alive and pure.
Stara Zagora Municipality organizes the commemoration at the Memorial Complex "The Defenders of Stara Zagora".
During the Russo-Turkish War of 1977/1878, Stara Zagora was the arena of the bloody battle against the many-thousand strong Turkish army. The stiff resistance of the Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers near the town slowed down the offensive of Suleiman Pasha's army, which was decisive for the defence of Mount Shipka and the outcome of the war. In this epic battle the beginning of the future great victory was forged. After six hours of fighting, the defenders of Stara Zagora were forced to retreat. The city fell and experienced its most terrible tragedy - sacked, burned and destroyed to the ground, in screams and rivers of blood, with thousands of innocent and defenceless victims finding their death in the fiery inferno.
