"Forward and Backward is a sketch opera written by Paul Hindemith. The composer wrote it for the collection of opera miniatures presented at the Baden-Baden Festival. The work lasts only 12 minutes. The action, as in a diabolical palindrome, unfolds forward and then back and forth. A tragedy unfolds involving jealousy, murder and suicide. All this is repeated in reverse order and so the work ends with a happy ending.
