State Opera Stara Zagora will open its new opera season with the performance of the opera Attila by Giuseppe Verdi. The joint production of the State Opera Stara Zagora and Teatro Lirico-Cagliari, Italy will be presented on 29 and 30 October at 19.00 on the stage of the Opera House. "Attila" is the first Bulgarian production of this kind of cooperation, which was prepared to be presented on the two partner stages. The two theatres participated equally in the preparatory stage and the realisation of the performance. In Stara Zagora over 250 costumes were sewn, accessories and props were made, and the lavish set for the spectacular production was produced. The premiere of the opera Attila took place on 27 September 2019 in Cagliari, Italy. An adapted version of the mega-production was presented in Stara Zagora on the stage of the Ancient Forum "Augusta Traiana" in the summer of the extraordinary year 2020. Now the entire production team is coming to Stara Zagora to stage the show in its original director's version.
On 29 and 30 October, audiences will see an impressive classical production with a strong emphasis on authenticity of costumes and period. The dramatic story in Verdi's early work of the devastating invasion of Italy by the Huns, led by their cruel leader Attila, of love and betrayal, will be brought to life in the skilful 'coexistence' of the great Italian tradition and high technology. The director of the production, Enrico Stinkelli - besides being a director and radio presenter - is an avid viewer and "thanks to the Barcacha programme I host, I believe I feel the pulse of the tastes and moods of Italian and international audiences". He warns of a "mass fatigue of distorted rereading of works" and insists "that the updating of the title must be done above all through a technological and visual language". This is the reason why part of the narrative of the performance he proposes is entrusted to the use of multimedia, which creates the suggestion of large mass scenes (the battle and the horde of barbarians) and of certain architectural elements (the gates of Rome). A kind of short film production in which the director works on a double play, the theatrical and the visual.
In the costumes, artist Salvatore Russo deploys the solid Italian tradition with lavish, rich clothes and attention to detail. While for the lighting, Stinkelly uses the most advanced technological tools.
At the conductor's podium on October 29 and 30 will stand Italian Jacopo Sipari, choirmaster Mladen Stanev. A constellation of operatic voices have been enlisted in the lead roles. The bass Julian Konstantinov will take on the role of the Hun chieftain Attila, a role that has brought the singer much success and acclaim at home and on the world stages. On 30 October the role of Attila will be performed by the magnificent bass Ivaylo Djurov. In the role of Foresto the audience will see the Romanian tenor Daniel Magdal and for the first time - the tenor Ivaylo Mihailov, in the role of Odabella - Tania Ivanova and Ioana Zhelezcheva, and in the role of the Roman general Ezio - Alexander Krunev and Niko Isakov. Also taking part are the soloists Alexander Marulev in the role of Leone, Ivaylo Yovchev /Uldino/, the choir, the orchestra of the State Opera-Stara Zagora, representatives of the Pre-Bulgarian Survival School "Baga-Tur".
