Stara Zagora Opera visits Sofia with "Eugene Onegin"

On 28 October at 19.00 on the stage of the National Theatre "Ivan Vazov" Stara Zagora Opera will present for the first time in Sofia its remarkable production of the opera "Eugene Onegin" by P. И. Tchaikovsky. The guest appearance is part of the theatre's rich jubilee programme dedicated to its respectable 100th anniversary.

Ever since its appearance at Stara Zagora's price last November, the performance of the opera "Eugene Onegin", with the premiere of which the 53rd edition of the unique Festival of Opera and Ballet Art was opened, aroused the enthusiasm of opera fans. The packed hall of the Stara Zagora Opera House on two consecutive nights and a wave of superlatives defined the triumph and the upward path of a production in which its creators and brilliant performers put all their creative fervor and talent. The opera Eugene Onegin is perhaps the most performed Russian title in the 99-year history of the Stara Zagora Opera. For the first time the masterpiece of P. И. 50 years later the Stara Zagora Opera presented the splendour of the Russian classic in a new original interpretation. The challenge was taken up by an enthusiastic and inspired team in the person of director Slavcho Nikolov, artist Gendoni, chief conductor Maestro Ivaylo Krinchev, choirmaster Mladen Stanev, choreography and plastic design by Romina Slavova and Marcelo Molina.

On 28 October, the citizens of Sofia and the guests of the capital will have the opportunity to enjoy the art of a delightful soloist ensemble. The role of Tatiana will be performed by the star of the Ukrainian opera scene with a rising international career, the soloist of the Stara Zagora Opera Tamara Kalinkina, who left the festival audience in Stara Zagora breathless with her astonishing impersonation. A singer with a beautiful voice and captivating artistry, Tamara Kalinkina will step onto the stage of the National Theatre for the second time - the audience will surely remember her impressive performance in the Concert for Peace programme in 2022. The role of Eugene Onegin will be performed by the world-renowned Romanian baritone Ionuc Pascu - anticipated and acclaimed in various leading baritone roles at the Stara Zagora Opera and on the stage of the Sofia Opera and Ballet. The outstanding bass Ivaylo Djurov will be Prince Gremin, and in the role of Olga the audience will see the talented young singer-soloist of the Ruse Opera Gloria Pencheva. The well-established tenor Nikolai Motov will perform the role of Lensky. Also taking part are Tereza Brakalova - in the role of Filipevna, Dobrinka Koynova /Larina/, Stoyan Buyukliev /Mosiu Trike/, Alexander Milev /Zaretsky/, Kostadin Yakshev /Gilio/, the orchestra, choir and ballet of the State Opera-Stara Zagora. Conductor Maestro Ivaylo Krinchev.

In the staging of the opera Eugene Onegin, director Slavcho Nikolov conveys contemporary suggestions of the eternal themes of love, friendship, loyalty, embedded in the genius poems of Pushkin and the music of Tchaikovsky.

"In our performance the main theme is missed opportunities, to think about what we are given by fate, how we take it for granted - we don't appreciate it and we don't keep it. And when we miss it we start to suffer for what we have lost. That is why the theme of the show is "There is no greater Hell than the Hell of missed opportunities". So it is with our characters, each of them misses their opportunity to enjoy what they have been given. Onegin because of his vanity and ego, Lenski because of excessive modesty, Olga out of coquetry, Larina in obedience to the dogmas of the family. It is Tatiana and Gremin who enjoy the moment, what they have and possess. And it is no coincidence that Tatiana keeps her honesty to the end, as she manages to enjoy what she has..." - says director Slavcho Nikolov.

A sparkling highlight of the production is the original stage design and the abundance of colour and luxury in the costumes, which were created by the artist Gendoni:

"When I created the set for the opera Eugene Onegin I wanted to make a personal and original interpretation of the cultural amalgam of Pushkin's era. I wanted to envelop the stage with the warmth of a Russian shawl. Into this softness I immersed the imperial whiteness of a simple classicist colonnade, which, with its elliptically arranged columns jutting out, would invite the peasants, happy with the fruits of their labour, into the home of the mistress Larina. The simple architecture of the set leaves an air for the rich colour of the costumes, reflecting the emotional breadth of the Russian countryside..."

Conductor Ivaylo Krinchev and the music of Tchaikovsky:

"In each of my interpretations of Tchaikovsky's music I have always sought to find those powerful dramatic confrontations that reveal the depth of the psychological processes in the human soul. This is even more true in the opera Eugene Onegin because of Pushkin's brilliant text. I know of no other musical-stage work with such a strong literary source. I would describe it as a lyrical-psychological opera in which, with its relatively simple plot and dramaturgy, there is an extraordinary richness and versatility in the construction of the characters. I have endeavoured to recreate that continuity of musical development which led the composer to create scene-dialogues, scene-arias, while the aria retains its complete form. The vocal lines are wide-ranging and extremely melodic. The score is a model of Tchaikovsky's typical masterful orchestration with a rich timbral palette and soloistic lines, a challenge to the performance qualities of any musician."
