The competition for young trumpeters started in 1995 as a national competition, the only one in Bulgaria for this specialty. Since the third edition it has been open for international participation, and the next IV is international. The idea for its creation was the trumpet teacher Pencho Penchev, who is also the artistic director of the competition. The competition developed very quickly and gained wide international recognition. Participants from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Malta, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Ukraine and Croatia compete in front of an authoritative international jury. Especially for the competition, Bulgarian composers write pieces for trumpet, which become compulsory and are performed by the participants. These are: professor Alexander Tekeliev, Kiril Lambov, Petar Petrov, Veselin Karaatanasov, Nikola Takov, Vanya Angelova, Tsvetti Dimitrova, Yordan Dafov and Yovcho Krushev. Traditionally, the competition ends with a concert of the winners and the jury accompanied by the orchestra of the Stara Zagora State Opera.
