Marcelo Molina - the youngest choreographer chosen by Boris Eifman in the second choreographic session at the iconic Alexandrinsky Theatre

The talented Mexican dancer Marcelo Molina is on the verge of realizing his first major ballet performance "Odon", which will be presented on the stage of the Antique Forum "Augusta Traiana" on August 17 at 21.00. Together with his Greek colleague Eleni Marcu, Marcelo Molina choreographs the two-act ballet to music by Mark John McEnroe and Mark Jay Saliba with the multinational ballet company of the Stara Zagora Opera. Just ten days ago, the talented artist and choreographer returned from St. Petersburg, where he was one of four choreographers in the second edition of the choreographic session organized by Innopraktika Foundation and Russian Seasons School together with Boris Eifman Dance Academy, in which various artists from around the world are selected to dance or create new choreography for the performance Global Values at the famous Alexandrinsky Theatre. The goal and mission of the session is cultural exchange. 4 international choreographers and 11 international dancers come to the Academy to practice classical and contemporary dance. In addition, for three weeks, dancers of different nationalities work with Russian choreographers, while foreign choreographers put their choreography with the Academy students. Academy students are dancers aged 16-18, professionally trained in classical and contemporary dance. This year 16 Academy students and two professional artists from the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre participated.

Soloist of the Stara Zagora Opera Ballet Marcelo Molina was among the four choreographers chosen this year and here is what the talented dancer had to say immediately after his return from Russia. The conditions of application included sending a biography, a current choreographic portfolio and a proposal for the work to be created. There were only 4 openings for choreographers, and over 200 applications were sent in. Boris Eifman himself was responsible for selecting the four choreographers and after five selection rounds I was offered a place with three other choreographers from the USA, Italy and Macedonia. I was the youngest choreographer chosen of the four.

The choreography I created is called Out-fit, a neoclassical piece that speaks to the role and social significance of clothing in contemporary society. By using clothes racks and colourful garments I wanted to show and question the mindset, stereotypes and beliefs we choose to 'wear' nowadays. Using clothes as a metaphor, five young and talented dancers were able to gracefully portray my vision and convey these concerns to the audience in a fresh, fun and nostalgic way. The audience appreciated and applauded the different and vivid approach, finding it truly captivating, interesting and new, something they had not seen before.

The premiere was on 24 July 2022 in the Great Hall of the Alexandrinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It was an honour to share the evening with such talented and brilliant artists, and to have Boris Eifman's outstanding ballet company as part of the programme. This experience helped me learn a lot about how great artists work, develop and create. Sharing many experiences and thoughts with artists from Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and Russia has expanded my creativity and professional skills. I left with the satisfaction of warm hospitality and high level of professionalism, and the realization of my project was for me a fulfilling growth experience.

The organizers, supervisors and Mr. Boris Eifman were pleased with the outcome we all achieved on stage and the foundation for future projects and relationships were laid. After such a formative experience, I can only be grateful and put into practice all that I have learned in future opportunities.

Now I have the premiere of Odon, a two-act ballet with live orchestra with the State Opera- Stara Zagora and I have a trip to Holland coming up where I will be choreographing for the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. These projects are extremely important and exciting for the development of my career.

I am grateful for the support that God, my family, friends and colleagues have given me. I am especially grateful for the support of Sylvia Tomova, the State Opera-Stara Zagora, so that I can develop and strengthen my dance and choreographic talents."
