From 2 to 4 August 2019 in Vidin will be held for the third consecutive year the music festival "Summer evenings of opera and ballet - Baba Vida 2019", organized by the Vidin Municipality. "Baba Vida" - the only fully preserved Bulgarian fortress in Bulgaria, which served as the castle of the local ruler in the Middle Ages, will become the main stage of the festival events. For the first time on the territory of the fortress will be presented spectacular musical and theatrical productions - so far concerts and chamber and theatrical performances have been held. Especially for this year's festival, the stage construction and an amphitheatre grandstand for the audience with about 800 seats are being built. Within three days and evenings the State Opera-Stara Zagora together with its partner Symphonieta - Vidin will present a diverse multi-genre programme of attractive performances as well as free performances for the youngest spectators.

The costume designer of the soloists is Denis Ivanov. The conductor of the choir is Mladen Stanev.

A star soloist line-up will delight opera lovers with their performances. Dragana Radakovic from Serbia will perform the role of Abigail. The renowned soprano has in recent seasons established herself as a preferred performer of the roles of Abigail and Turandot at various prestigious opera houses in Europe, Asia and as far away as Australia. In the role of Nabucco, she will be partnered by the brilliant Romanian baritone Ionuc Pascu, who is known to Bulgarian audiences from his unforgettable guest appearances in Stara Zagora in the performances of Nabucco /along with the world opera diva Maria Gulegina - Opera at the Stadium 2018/, Troubadour and in the FOBI Gala Concert in 2016. The talented singer has a respectable biography with permanent engagements in addition to the Bucharest Opera House and opera theatres and festivals in Romania, the Tel Aviv Opera House, Israel, the opera houses of Salerno, Padua, Liège, Valencia, touring in the Netherlands and South Korea.

From 16.00 on 3 August - in the hall of the Municipal Council of Vidin, will be presented the performance of the chamber opera "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe" by Roland Baumgartner. The place of the performance is not chosen by chance. Taking into account the story set in the plot of "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe", the director Ognyan Draganov chooses for the stage of the action the Meeting Hall of the Municipal Council in the building of Vidin Municipality.

The plot of The Trial of Marilyn Monroe deals with the naming of a street in Vienna after Marilyn Monroe. A group of citizens filed a lawsuit against City Hall's decision. The stage action reflects the process in which the positions of both disputing parties are presented. Familiar and unfamiliar moments from the life of the famous actress, Marilyn Monroe, will come to life, which with its social projection in the life of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, generated controversial reactions. The finale is open-ended. The final decision FOR or AGAINST is up to the audience-jury.

Conducted by Andria Pavlich /Austria/, set design by Todor Demerov, costume adaptation by Teodora Dzhambazova. Participating soloists are Neli Necheva, Teresa Brakalova, Teodor Petkov, actors from the State Puppet Theatre-Stara Zagora Yancho Ivanov, Bilyana Raynova, Chamber Orchestra of the State Opera-Stara Zagora.

At 21.00 on 3 August, the cult dance drama "Nestinarka" to the music of Marin Goleminov will be presented on the stage of Baba Vida Fortress. "Nestinarka" is an emblematic title for the Bulgarian ballet, which is one of the few Bulgarian works that brought worldwide recognition to its authors. The idea to resurrect it in its full stage version and to dedicate it to 90 years of Bulgarian ballet and 110 years since the birth of the genius Marin Goleminov, is the Sylvia Tomova - current artistic director of the ballet of the State Opera-Stara Zagora. Choreographer Olesya Pantikina, choreographs "Nestinarka" based on the original choreography of her mother Margarita Arnaudova. The long-time director of the first Bulgarian modern company Arabesque choreographed Marin Goleminov's exceptional music in 1978 and then choreographed the unforgettable full version of the ballet Nestinarka especially for the National Ballet, in which the prima ballerina Sylvia Tomova danced the title role. It is on this choreographic version that the new production of the State Opera-Stara Zagora is based. The dance performance intertwines the ethno-motifs of a real ritual, which takes place on the Day of Saints Constantine and Helena, and the personal drama of a girl in love. Adding to the fiery impact of the work, steeped in Bulgarian drama, are the spectacular set and costumes by Ivan Tokadzhiev and Ana-Maria Tokadzhieva /based on original ideas and costumes by Maria Trendafilova/, which are another strong and compelling highlight of the show.

The main roles on 3 August will be danced by Anelia Dimitrova /Demna/, Romina Slavova /Struna/, Fiordi Loha /Naiden/, Stanko Tanev /The Old Man/ and Ivaylo Yanev /Collo/, soloists and cordeballet of the State Opera-Stara Zagora. The prima ballerina Anelia Dimitrova received for the role of Demna the prestigious award of SBMTD and Radio Classic FM "Crystal Lyra" 2018 in the category "Young Performer".

The third edition of the "Summer Evenings of Opera and Ballet" will end on 4 August at 21.00 with the performance of the opera-buff "The Beautiful Helena" by Jacques Offenbach. An impressive, provocative and unconventional staging of the popular and beloved title will be offered by the Stara Zagora Opera to the music lovers on the stage of the medieval fortress "Baba Vida". Fake news from ancient times to the present day is the starting point of director Slavcho Nikolov in his search for a different look at the classical musical work. The story of Helen the Beautiful, which happened 3,600 years ago and was recorded by Homer some 600 years later, is told by word of mouth, embellished and fictionalized. "What else is it if not a prototype of today's fake news, which we think of as an 'invention' of the 21st century!" says the director. According to Slavcho Nikolov, "The Beautiful Elena" should be watched with "unprejudiced thoughts and feelings". Because there is no record of whether this happened and in "a male-dominated, patriarchal world" Elena was the scapegoat "who became a hostage of the whole political system". With this setup, the director is trying to rehabilitate the Beautiful Helen and destroy the stereotype that "the Beautiful Helen was the woman who cheated on her husband and became the cause of the Trojan War."

The role of Elena on August 4 will be played by the famous actress and singer Antoaneta Dobreva-Neti. In the role of Paris the audience will see Nikolai Motov, Milko Mikhailov is Menelaus, Georgi Dinev will be in the role of Calchas. In the roles of Ajax 1 and Ajax 2 are the actors from the State Puppet Theatre - Stara Zagora Tsveti Penyashki and Yancho Ivanov. Participants: orchestra "Symphonieta-Vidin", soloists, chamber orchestra, choir, ballet of the State Opera-Stara Zagora.

The performance will be conducted by Dimitar Kossev, the scenography is by Ivan Tokadzhiev, costume adaptation - Ana-Maria Tokadzhieva, consultant sculpture Romina Slavova.
