The performance of the chamber opera "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe" by Roland Baumgartner will be presented for the first time in Stara Zagora on 8 November at 16.00 on the last festival day of the 49th edition of the Festival of Opera and Ballet Art.

The premiere of "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe" took place on the stage of the Bulgarian Cultural Institute Wittgenstein House in the Austrian capital Vienna, where State Opera Stara Zagora visited on 27 and 28 April 2018 for the third time with outstanding success.

"The Trial of Marilyn Monroe" is the latest work by the famous Austrian composer Roland Baumgartner. The chamber work was first performed in 2014 in Ruse, Bulgaria. The well-established creative team in the face of the composer Roland Baumgartner, the director Ognyan Draganov and the conductor Andrija Pavlich give a new life to the work born in the Austrian capital - this time the performance takes place with the soloists, orchestra and ballet of the Stara Zagora Opera and actors from the State Puppet Theatre - Stara Zagora. The creators of the show strive to show that opera does not only tell stories from the past or fairytale plots. On the contrary, opera art can also present the contemporary way of life in an understandable and fascinating way.

"The Marilyn Monroe Trial brings together the efforts of artists from different countries. Roland Baumgartner has an impressive biography: studies at the Vienna Academy of Music, specialisation with Leonard Bernstein, collaboration with the Philadelphia and Prague Philharmonic Orchestras, music for several Hollywood productions, work with pop legend Engelbert Humperding... The 48th edition of the Festival of Opera and Ballet Art opened with the brilliant premiere of his opera-musical Sissy-the Empress's Soul. Conductor Andrija Pavlich is a close friend of Baumgartner's from his studies at the Vienna Academy of Music, and has also made prestigious appearances such as at the Volksoper and teaching at the Gustav Mahler Conservatory Vienna. Contemporary opera theatre brings together the different arts and this collaboration continues to develop. Curious and tempted by chamber opera forms, Ognyan Draganov seeks in his directorial decision an even more active and organic interaction between singers and artists. The audience will see an attractive and modern performance outside the generally accepted operatic tradition. The new participant in the performance is the audience itself, which has the last word.

The venue for the performance was not chosen by chance. Taking into account the story set in the plot of "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe", the director Ognyan Draganov chose for the Stara Zagora premiere the Meeting Hall of the Municipal Council in the building of Stara Zagora Municipality.

The plot of "The Trial of Marilyn Monroe" deals with the naming of a street in Vienna after Marilyn Monroe. A group of citizens filed a lawsuit against City Hall's decision. The stage action reflects the process in which the positions of both disputing parties are presented. Familiar and unfamiliar moments in the life of the famous actress, Marilyn Monroe, will come to life, which with its social projection in the life of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s, generated controversial reactions. The finale is open-ended. The final decision FOR or AGAINST is up to the audience-jury.

Choreography and direction by Yuri Grigorovich

Artist - Simon Virsaladze

Assistant Ballet Master Nikolai Simachov

Artistic director of the ballet Sara - Nora Krasteva

Soloists Katerina Petrova, Tsetso Ivanov, Kirill Ivanov, Matthew Whittle, etc.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed the ballet The Nutcracker in 1891 - 1892. It premiered on 18 December 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. Outside Russia, the ballet debuted with a performance in England in 1934. Ten years later, The Nutcracker was also performed in the United States , in San Francisco. Tchaikovsky's work was a huge success in New York, and since then a tradition has been established to perform the ballet every year at Christmas. Until 1988, the Sofia Opera and Ballet performed Vasily Ivanovich Vainonen's version of The Nutcracker. Yuri Grigorovich's production, as the print media of the time wrote, was a complete triumph of Russian music and choreography.

It is the story of a little girl who waits in vain for her Christmas present on a festive night. And when she receives a nutcracker in the form of a soldier in a beautiful uniform, she does not yet know that she is about to embark on a magical journey in which she will fight the King of Mice, that the toy will become a prince who will take her to dancing snowflakes and fairies, and finally play with the most beautiful dolls and flowers!
