Dario di Vietri - from Arena di Verona and the Pyramids of Giza to Beroe Stadium in Stara Zagora

"Opera at the Stadium will celebrate its fifth birthday on 10 July at 20.00 at the Beroe Stadium with the presentation of the magnificent Verdi opera Aida. With this performance the Stara Zagora Opera joins the world celebrations of 150 years since the premiere of the opera "Aida".

The performance will be with the special participation of Dario di Vietri in one of his crowning roles - that of Radames. It is not the first time the charming Italian has visited Bulgaria. His first appearance was at the invitation of the great Christina Angelakova in the role of Don José in the performance of the opera "Carmen" of the Stara Zagora Opera, which was presented at the Mozart Festival in Pravets in 2017. BNT filmed and broadcast this performance many times. In Stara Zagora, Dario di Vietri visited at the invitation of the director Ognyan Draganov in the premiere opera-puppet production of the opera Turandot. Now Bulgarian music lovers will be able to see and hear him as Radames - a role that has brought much success to the singer. He has appeared many times in Franco Zeffirelli's remarkable production at the Arena di Verona, guest starred in the mega production of the Warsaw People's Opera in Dubai, sang at the Egyptian pyramids in Giza in 2019, and at the end of May 2021 he is again Radames in the Cairo Opera's production dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the first performance of the grand opera.

Dario di Vietri always returns to Bulgaria with a very warm feeling and does not fail to declare his friendship towards his colleagues and the staff of the Stara Zagora Opera. He comes to Stara Zagora after an engagement in several thematic opera galas at the Cartagena Music Festival in far away Colombia. He is looking forward to meeting the Bulgarian audience at Beroe Stadium.

Dario di Vietri and his Radames

Italian critics describe Dario Di Vietri as "one of the most remarkable realities of the Italian tenor panorama. One of the few singersprivileged to have the voice for those roles writtenfortrue Italianlyrictenors, whose characteristics are beautiful timbre, brilliant pitches, elegance of phrase combined with purity and spontaneity".

Dario di Vietri made his debut as Radames at the 2015 Kazan Festival. "I remember being excited for the complex debut in this remarkable and difficult opera by Verdi - I was only 30 years old then. However, after the aria Celeste Aida, the tension eased. I was well "followed" by Maestro Marco Boemi. After Kazan, my second performance of Aida was at the Rome Opera just two months later /in April 2015/. The emotion and tension was still present until the rehearsal of "Aida" at the Arena di Verona, where, having sung a record number of 10 performances with all the conductors present during the season and with as many artists as possible, every bit of tension became a memory. Since then, I have distinguished tension from the "healthy" emotion that allows us artists to have that adrenaline that is the lifeblood of a role and a character."

Years after his debut as Radames, Dario di Vietri never stops looking for new colours and new ways to perfect his interpretation. He is always very focused and attentive, never underestimating the difficulty of the role, but simply more relaxed and secure. He always follows the recommendation of his teacher, opera legend Bruna Baglioni, to sing with his voice, not to force, not to "broaden" and "darken", because such roles develop with time and continuous training...

Dario di Vietri as Radames /Arena di Verona/ - video

Dario Di Vietri was born in Bari. He met Luciano Pavarotti when he was only 16 /after a concert by the great tenor/ and asked him if he agreed to train him. Pavarotti agrees and starts working with the young singer without charging him money for the lectures. He later entered the Milan Conservatory in Vittorio Terranova's class and immediately afterwards went on to the Scuola dell'Opera Italiana in Bologna. He improved his vocal skills in the master classes of Jomi Aragall, Catia Ricciarelli, and Bonaldo Giotti. The real turning point in his training came in 2012 thanks to his work with mezzo-soprano Bruna Baglioni, who became his mentor to this day. In parallel, he has worked with operatic authorities including Sergio La Stella of the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, Nelson Guido Calzi /Scala di Milano/ and Marco Boemi. In 2009/2010 she made her debut as Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly at the Lombardia Opera. Since the summer of 2014 he has participated in various productions at the Arena di Verona, where he debuted as Calaf in Turandot with conductor Daniel Oren and director Franco Zeffirelli. "After several auditions with the Arena's artistic management very close to the opening of the season, I was offered the five main tenor roles: Radames in Aida, Riccardo in Masque Ball, Calaf in Turandot, Don José in Carmen, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly. Among these five roles, only three I had already debuted in - Radames and Riccardo I had never sung. I prepared the role of Riccardo in fifteen days in Verona, thanks to the support and patience of the accompanists at the Arena, debuting the role in a dress rehearsal conducted by Maestro Andrea Battistoni. I had to overcome the first major hurdle. In life, I like to take my paths calmly. Putting myself to the test with the complexity of this role in such a short time and in this place (which for me represents the theatre of the greats I admire and have learned and continue to learn from) gave me all the courage and strength to take on the role of Calaf as well. My debut took place from the second act of the show, conducted by Daniel Oren. I stepped into the place of the injured Carlo Ventre in an extreme way on 30 July 2014. The explosion of applause and the insistent request for an encore after "Nessun dorma" was the greatest emotion of my life. Thanks to the confidence given to me by Paolo Gavazzeni and Giampiero Sobrino, the last performance of Turandot on 2 August was confirmed and I was able to prove that my debut was not just a fluke - the audience once again responded with endless applause. This memory gives me the energy to be able to do what I have wanted to do since I was a child: be a tenor. "

Since that moment, Dario di Vietri has sung the leading roles of Radames in Aida, Riccardo in Masked Ball, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Pinkerton in Madame Butterfly, Renato de Greio in Manon Lescaut, Samson in Samson and Delilah, Don José in Carmen, and Thucydides in The Village Honor on various opera stages in Italy and around the world as: Arena di Verona, Opera di Roma, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari, Teatro Verdi in Salerno, Puccini Festival in Torre Del Lago, Opera de Oviedo, Greek National Opera, Maggio Fiorentino Festival, Seoul Arts Center, Teatro Reggio in Parma, Belgrade National Theatre, Bucharest National Opera, Pravets Festival, Ankara State Opera, Cairo Opera House, Astana Opera, Stara Zagora Opera, Polish National Opera, Dubai Opera, Carolina Opera.
