The wonderful Ballet Evening on July 10 at 9 pm at the Antique Forum "Augusta Traiana" includes 3 titles of one-act ballets: "Chopiniana", "Lotus" and "The Next".
Two prima ballerinas staged "Chopeniana": the distinguished prima of the Stara Zagora Ballet and honorary citizen of Stara Zagora Snezhana Deskova and her student prima ballerina Anelia Dimitrova.
For Snezhana Deskova this is her second meeting with the Chopeniana Ballet. The first time, with the premiere of "Chopeniana" on March 26, 1970 /staged by Dimitar Tsenov, artist Ivan Savov/, she was a soloist. "The soloists in the show are graduates of the State Choreographic School. Their professional training, as well as their work with the Soviet pedagogues N. Baltacheeva and A. Kumisnikov on "Chopeniana" are of undoubted importance for the generally mastered romantic expressiveness of the movements, for the poetic softness in their delivery, for the spirited speech of the hands and the corps, which finish the exquisitely plastic phrases" - wrote the critic after this performance.
Today Snezhana Deskova is staging the ballet "Chopiniana" on the stage of the Stara Zagora Opera:
"...Here the style is the greatest thing. It has no analogue with any other classical ballet - more special body posture, more special hands... All this, if not done, the style of "Chopeniana" is lost. It becomes an ordinary classical ballet. It's neither Sleeping Beauty, nor Swan Lake, nor The Nutcracker...
....We took the version of the Mariinsky Theatre because that's where "Chopiniana" started, that's where it was done first. It is important to show it very accurately - from the many recordings that are available, I chose one with young ballerinas, rather students graduating from ballet school, because they are the most accurately shown how to dance...." - says the prima ballerina.
The ballet "Chopiniana" was recognized as a classical work at its inception, a rare, almost exceptional case in the entire history of ballet. Its author was the brilliant Russian balletmaster Mikhail Fokine /1880-1942/, whose creative activity outlined the general directions of modern choreographic art. Fokine based his work on keyboard works by Frederic Chopin, working on two successive editions in 1908 and 1909. He called his second and final revision Chopiniana, and later added the designation Romantic Dreams. Fokine himself has wonderfully expressed the essence of his plastic composition, neither conforming to a clear-cut plot nor seeming like a showy, sonorously performed concerto. Fokine's hero is the musician-poet himself, surrounded by tender vision-sylphides, the fruit of his dream, which multiplies them in their fascination.
In his book Against the Current , Fokine says that with Chopiniana he wanted "to return the conventional ballet dance to the moment of its highest development". Fokine was referring to the romantic ballet of the 19th century, when classical dance evoked the delight of spectators not by its acrobatic complexity, its breakneck tricks and difficulties, but by its poetic sublimity.
The new production by Snezhana Deskova and Anelia Dimitrova is designed with spectacular multimedia by Sergey Golubev and costumes by Parvoleta Chavdarova-Leticia. Kaito Takahashi will dance the role of the Adolescent, Anelia Dimitrova will partner him in the waltz, Tsao Yu-Chen will be the soloist in the mazurka, Romina Slavova in the prelude, Martina Prefeto in the waltz. Ballet of the Stara Zagora State Opera takes part.

The young choreographer Alessandra Scalambrino from Italy came at the invitation of the Artistic Director of the Stara Zagora Opera Ballet Sylvia Tomova, after she won in Modica, Italy the special prize for choreography. Her "Lotus" urges us to be like the lotus flower - to revive ourselves every day and to face difficulties with courage. For it is the lotus flower that is an excellent metaphor for people who are able to overcome grief with calm, self-control and perseverance. The choreographer develops this theme, starting from the misleading idea of romantic love, according to which one can only be happy in a couple, to the final realization that one does not need anyone to perfect oneself. "We have in all of us the tools for transforming grief into 'miracle'. Alessandra Scalambrino chooses for her performance the inspiring music of the sensual pianist and composer Frederic Chopin.

For the finale, the dancer and choreographer Hristian Bakalov - innovator, experimenter, restless spirit, established beyond the borders of Bulgaria, brings to the Stara Zagora stage one of his first dance choreographies, which brought him international success. This is an all-male dance based on the popular chanson by Jacques Brel "Au Suivant".
"Au Suivant" is my first "live" choreography (the "first" being a short film), commissioned by the Young Ballet of France in 1999. The choreography made by me functions as the "movement subtitles" of this cult song created by one of the giants of French chanson. Allowing the dancers' bodies to express through movement the momentary charge that floods us when listening to the song, the choreography is like a physical materialization of that same emotional, energetic and artistic charge that uniquely defines Brel himself as a person and an artist," says the talented choreographer.
