"It all starts with movement..." - the message of Friedemann Fogel
In 1982, the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) chose April 29 as Dance Day. The date is, of course, symbolic - every year on April 29, the birth of the great French dance reformer Jean-Georges Nover (1727-1810) is also celebrated, and the world pays its respects to the most sublime art - dance.
A performing art whose content is revealed through dance-musical images - this is the definition of ballet today. And according to Jean-Georges Nover, the creator of ballet as a distinct theatrical genre, it is "drama written with music and embodied through choreography"! Nover's birth date - 29 April - has been designated by UNESCO as a celebration of dance worldwide. Because "All modern dance theatre derives from his action ballets!" claims Maurice Béjart. "Not entertainment for the public, but an art called to benefit society," is what he calls ballet.
Each year, a salute from a world-renowned choreographer and dancer spreads throughout the world. The outstanding individual is selected by the founders of International Dance Day, the International Dance Committee of the International Theater Institute (ITI), in conjunction with the World Dance Alliance, an associate member of the ITI. The special address for the International Day of Dance aims, by celebrating the day of dance, to draw attention to the universality of this art form, to cross all political, cultural and ethnic barriers and to bring people closer to each other - with a common language - that of dance. This day is a day of celebration for those who see the value and importance of the art form DANCE and acts as a "wake-up call" for governments, politicians and institutions who have not yet recognized its importance to people and the individual and have not yet realized its potential for economic growth.
The author of the 2021 address is Friedemann Vogel
"A global star who has never lost ground under his feet" is how Tanz Magazine described Friedemann Vogel when they selected him as "Dancer of the Year" for the second time in 2019. The following year, the prestigious German Dance Prize honoured the premier soloist of the Stuttgart Ballet with the Outstanding Performer Award in recognition of his long and distinguished international career.
Considering how he has wanted to become a dancer for as long as he can remember, it is perhaps no surprise that the first feature-length documentary about him is entitled Friedemann Vogel - The Incarnation of Dance. For more than 20 years, the award-winning artist has danced on the most prestigious stages around the world, from La Scala in Milan to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to the World Ballet Festival in Tokyo, winning over critics and audiences alike. Known for his deeply moving portrayals in dramatic ballets as well as his electrifying performances in more contemporary works, Friedemann has been awarded the title of Kammertänzer, Germany's highest honor for a dancer.
Message for International Dance Day 2021 from Friedemann Vogel
"Everything begins with movement - an instinct we all have - and dance is movement perfected for communication. As important and impressive as impeccable technique is, it is ultimately what the dancer expresses in the movement that matters.
As dancers, we are constantly in motion and strive to create those unforgettable moments. Regardless of dance genre, this is what every dancer strives to achieve. So when suddenly we are no longer allowed to dance because theatres are closed and festivals are cancelled, our worlds are at a standstill. There is no physical contact. There are no performances. No audience. Never in recent history has the dance community been so collectively challenged to stay motivated in order to find its raison d'être. And yet, it is when something dear to us is taken away that we truly appreciate how important what we do is, and how much dance means to society as a whole. Dancers are often applauded for their physical prowess, when in fact we are sustained much more by our mental strength. I believe it is this unique combination of physical and psychological flexibility that will help us overcome, reinvent ourselves to keep dancing and keep inspiring."
