Nino Rota /1911-1979/ is better known as a film composer. He worked with some of the most important directors of the 20th c. - Lucino Visconti /"Rocco and his Brothers"/, Franco Zeffirelli /"Romeo and Juliet"/, Francis Ford Coppola /"The Godfather"/. In his operas, Nino Rota continues the Italian operatic tradition, with a strong melodic line and long phrases that provide singers with great opportunities to demonstrate vocal mastery.
The one-act comic opera The Two Married Men was created as a radio production in 1950. Its first on-air performance took place on 15 November 1950, conducted by Franco Ferrara. The first opera production was at the London Club - Scala Theatre on 17 March 1952.
The action takes place in a courtyard, on the outskirts of a modern city, in the middle of the last century. The place is populated by interesting characters: the Shoemaker, an ironic observer of everything that is happening; the three maids Maria, Lucia and Lisa, who comment politely but with mockery on the events around them; Vittorio the porter, who cannot refuse another favour to buy Lucia a litre of milk. Mariuccia is a pianist. She doesn't appeal much to the "listeners" of her piano lessons, but everyone is kind to her. Everyone is polite, rarely sincere in their dealings. This gives rise to many comical misunderstandings.
