Plovdiv Opera presents "Village Honour" and "Pagliacci"

Plovdiv Opera will perform "Village Honour" and "Pagliacci" on the stage of the Stara Zagora Opera on 27 January

On 27 January at 19.00 the opera audience in Stara Zagora will enjoy the one-act operas "Village Honour" by Mascagni and "Pagliacci" by Leoncavallo, presented by the Plovdiv Opera. Both productions are directed by Nina Naydenova, set designer Ivan Tokadzhiev, costume and puppet designer Nikolina Kostova-Bogdanova, choreographer Boryana Sechanova.

On 27 January, the conductor will be Dian Chobanov, and the main roles are entrusted to the soloists of the Plovdiv Opera Mariana Panova, Tanya Ivanova, Stoyan Daskalov, Mikhail Puliyev, Peter Danailov, Valeria Mircheva, Svetlana Ivanova and Mark Fowler.

When the young Mascagni decided to participate in the competition for one-act operas of the publisher Sonsonio with the opera "Village Honour", it never crossed his mind that he would win the first prize. Not only that, his opera became one of the most watched and loved operas in operatic literature. Ironically, Leoncavallo's opera Pagliaccio was rejected in the same competition because it did not meet the conditions - it was in two acts. But it is now decades since the two stirring universal human dramas have been performed with great success in one evening and have paraded the world's stages as shining examples of the veristic idea.

The plot is from the life of the common man, the drama is subordinated to the eternal themes of love and infidelity. According to the director's conception, "the two one-act titles are united by the same theme, viewed in mirror image, in a two-part play where the action takes place in the same place - Sicily, the land of Honour, but at different times, refracted through the gaze of Woman and the gaze of Man. Also suggestive are the giant 1:20 scale puppets that tower over the performers on stage.

Directed by Nina Naydenova:

"....In Village Honour, the female position on the issue of infidelity dominates. The Mother, the Fiancée and the Mistress - three women, three different fates under the gaze of "society".

In Pagliaccio, male ego, male honour, male passion, competition, lust, and power are the dominants of the action. The personal drama of the Artist, Pagliaccio the clown, grows into a protest against his Audience, moreover, grows into a protest against the influence of public opinion. But is this a problem only of the Artist who unleashes, his passions, his naked self on the stage - the arena, alone in front of his audience or is it a problem of many of us? As if we all do more for others who watch, demand, expect and judge us, not for ourselves or the person close to us.

Therein lies the relevance of the themes set in "Village Honor" and "Pagliaccio" - two works written a century ago where Love, Infidelity as Betrayal and Honor war in the name of being free to choose, to be "Yourself!""
