Denis Ivanov and the dream "Swan Lake":

... "Swan Lake" is the jewel of ballet and is the goal of every self-respecting theatre and ballet company...

For the Stara Zagora Opera, the appearance of this title in the cultural poster of the theater, after a thirty-year absence is a real event and a challenge ... both for the production team, the artistic staff, and for the Stara Zagora audience - a proven music lover in classical ballet, long thirsty for such a cultural sensation ...

For me, as an artist, the personal invitation of the prima donna of the National Ballet - Sylvia Tomova, for the overall visualization of the performance - set design, costumes, light design, etc. is a dream that I never even had...

For me, the viewer Denis Ivanov, the immortal work of one of my favourite composers P.I. Tchaikovsky is a performance that is painfully familiar, loved and researched for years and is very personal because I associate it with my passion and admiration for the great Maya Plisetskaya and the wonderful 1957 Bolshoi Theatre film adaptation.

For me, the artist and creator Denis Ivanov, however , Swan Lake is something different...

From the very beginning of my work on the show, I realized that I did not want to repeat what "everyone" has been doing for nearly two hundred years... For me, creating a "supposedly improved" replica of the shows around the world is uninteresting and boring...

It was interesting for me to capture myself in this tale and to explore the impact I get from this work, in order to be able to "dress" the performance with the suggestions and sensations of my inner world and thus to turn the painfully familiar performance into a new, modern performance, solved with all the current means of modern stage design and stage technology and possibilities. .."

Production history:

The premiere of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet Swan Lake took place on 4 March 1877 on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The original choreography was by Julius Resinger, but the production failed. On January 15, 1895, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, the entire production was performed again. The choreography this time was by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. This version is established as the classic for the work. It is the basis of most subsequent productions of Swan Lake to this day. The roles of Odette and Odile are usually performed by the same ballerina and this is considered one of the most difficult ballet roles.

Content:

The plot is based on an old German legend about a beautiful maiden turned into a white swan. The four acts of the ballet alternate between real and fantastic pictures.

Celebrating his coming of age in the palace park, Prince Siegfried is having fun with friends. A flock of swans flying over the park draws him after them. He goes into the forest and there, on the shore of the lake, among the swans, the prince sees Odette dancing in the moonlight. Odette is bewitched by the evil wizard Rothbart and is human in appearance at night, but transforms into a swan during the day. By day she is the swan queen and has a crown on her head. Overwhelmed by her beauty and shocked by her story, Siegfried swears to Odette eternal love.

At the ball in the castle, by the will of the Queen - Siegfried's mother - he must choose a wife. But the prince is indifferent to all present until Odilia, Rothbart's daughter, appears, whom the wizard has transformed to look exactly like Odette. Siegfried thinks of her as Odette and his choice falls on her. Realizing soon what a mistake he has made, Siegfried goes to the lake and begs Odette's forgiveness, but does not receive it. Pulling the crown from Odette's head, Siegfried challenges Rothbart.

There are several versions of the finale. In the tale, the stormy waves of the raging lake engulf Odette and Siegfried. In another version of the story, Rothbart challenges the waves. In the Russian version, Siegfried engages Rothbart in battle and defeats him. The curse is lifted, the swans are transformed into lovely maidens, and Siegfried and Odette are happy. According to another version, Odette disappears into the lake and Siegfried follows her. They are reunited in death, and the evil Rothbart is destroyed. The swan maidens are now in human form.
