Bizet's opera Carmen is based on the novella Carmen by the French writer Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870), written in 1845. The libretto was written by Henri Méliès and Louis Halévy, who also wrote many of the texts of Offenbach's operettas, including La Belle Helene. They changed many things from Merimee's novella, especially with the two protagonists. Their images are much ennobled and with enhanced positive traits. The secondary character in the novella, Escamillo, is presented as a contrasting image to Don José. The image of Micaela is also expanded and contrasted with Carmen. The opera Carmen was first performed on 3 March 1875 in Paris. The premiere was a complete failure, and Bizet was accused of immorality. The composer died on 3 June that year, exactly three months after the premiere. Only after his death, Carmen was performed in Vienna with extraordinary success. Since then it has not left the stages of the whole world and it is not by chance that it is considered the most popular of all operas. Bizet's friend, the composer Ernest Guiraud (1837-1892), with whom he had studied together in Italy, made a new revision of Carmen, replacing the spoken dialogues with recitatives and inserting ballet music in the opera's last act. Today, the opera is performed both in the original and in Guiraud's revision.
